about Victor

Victor Bento is a Brazilian countertenor whose artistry bridges the worlds of performance, scholarship, and inclusive pedagogy. Known for his clarity of tone, stylistic sensitivity, and expressive presence, Victor has built a diverse career across South and North America. Rooted in Brazil’s rich traditions of sacred music and early music performance, he began his musical path as a pianist, later finding his voice as a countertenor. His performances are marked by a compelling blend of technical precision and emotional nuance, earning him praise from the South Florida Classical Review as a “promising countertenor.” With a special affinity for historically informed performance, Victor brings a scholarly and interpretive depth to his work that resonates with both audiences and collaborators.

He has appeared as a soloist with prominent ensembles and festivals such as Blue Hill Bach, the Bach Roots Festival, Opera Neo, Orchestra Miami, and the Academy of Sacred Drama in New York City. Notable engagements include Handel’s Rodelinda (Unulfo), Britten’s Abraham and Isaac, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Mass in B Minor, Christ lag in Todes Banden, and Vivaldi’s Magnificat. In 2024, he performed the title role of San Adriano in Francesco Pistocci’s Il Martirio di San Adriano with the Academy of Sacred Drama. His U.S. career follows a strong foundation in Brazil, where he performed with leading ensembles including Camerata Antiqua de Curitiba and appeared at major venues such as Sala São Paulo and Theatro São Pedro. His dedication to early music has also led to revival performances of historically significant works, including 17th- and 18th-century repertoire rarely heard in modern concert halls.

Alongside his performance work, Victor is an advocate for inclusive and equity-centered vocal pedagogy. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he serves as an Instructor of Record. Victor teaches applied voice, lyric diction, and vocal technique, and has led masterclasses and lectures on gender-affirming voice care in both academic and community settings in the U.S. and Brazil. His teaching approach reflects a holistic understanding of the voice as both a technical instrument and a deeply personal mode of expression.

Victor holds undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance from the Federal University of Paraná and The School of Music and Fine Arts of Paraná. He also earned a Master’s in Musicology from the Federal University of Paraná and a Master’s in Vocal Performance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His vocal studies have been shaped by internationally renowned teachers, including Robynne Redmon, Jamie-Rose Guarrine, María Cristina Kiehr, Michael Chance, Rodrigo del Pozzo, and Sophie Daneman. Among his honors are first prizes at the 2020 Linus Lerner International Singing Competition (Brazil) and the 2023 National Association of Teachers of Singing (New England). Through performance, research, and mentorship, Victor Bento continues to advance a vision of classical music that is expressive, historically informed, and inclusive. Victor lives in Miami, FL with his husband David and their cat Guava Maria.
